What is yoga?

Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice that connects the body, breath and mind through a series of physical postures, breath control, meditation and ethical principles which promote overall well being.

What to expect in a yoga class?

My classes are mixed style classes, incorporating elements of vinyasa flow, traditional hatha yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. So expect both movement and stillness within the practice.

I’m a beginner, is it ok to attend a class?

Yoga is non-competitive and there will usually be a mix of people with different abilities within the class. Several variations of postures will be offered with the option to explore deeper only if you want to.

Do I need a yoga mat?

If you practice regularly then you should have your own mat. However I do carry a few spares with me.

I’m not flexible or strong?

No problem! Over time with a regular practice you will build strength and increase flexibility.

What is vinyasa flow?

Vinyasa flow is a dynamic style of yoga asana or postures that synchronizes movement with the breath. It can be both slow and gentle or fast and strong practice depending on the teacher.

What is Hatha yoga?

The word ‘hatha’ is a combination of ‘ha’ meaning sun, and ‘tha’  meaning moon, representing the balance of opposing forces - such as strength and flexibility. All forms of physical yoga that are practiced are ‘hatha’ yoga, however the term has become known for a more gentle practice involving static poses and breathing techniques.

What is Pranayama?

Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga, involving various techniques that manipulate the breath to influence the flow of vital energy (prana) within the body. It encompasses specific patterns of inhalation, exhalation, and breath retention aimed at promoting relaxation, reducing stress, improving respiratory health, and enhancing mental focus and vitality.

Why practice yoga?

There are many reasons why someone shopuld practice yoga; physical health, mental well-being, and community or socialising are just a few.

I’m not able to attend the classes at these times?

Please suggest a new class near you as I will be opening new classes over the next year.

What is Yoga Alliance Professionals and why is it important to find an accredited teacher?

Yoga Alliance Professionals is an organization that provides support, accreditation, and resources for yoga teachers, schools, and practitioners. It aims to maintain and elevate standards within the yoga community by offering certification, continuing education programs, and guidance for yoga professionals.

Yoga Alliance Professionals sets certain standards and guidelines for yoga teacher training programs to ensure they meet specific criteria regarding curriculum, contact hours, and experienced instructors. Upon completion of a certified program, teachers can register with Yoga Alliance Professionals, which may enhance their credibility within the yoga community and among potential students.

Will it help with sports and fitness like running or cycling?

Incorporating yoga into a training regimen for runners, cyclists, or other sports will increase flexibility, strength, balance and recovery time, preventing injuries, enhancing your overall performance, and contributing to a more balanced and holistic approach to training and well-being.

What should I wear?

Loose comfortable clothng is best. Something that does’nt restrict your movement. A blanket is also useful for relaxation at the end of class.

I have a health condition or injury, can I still practice yoga?

Firstly you should speak to your GP or physiotherapist to see if a yoga practice is suitable for your condition or injury.

Many people practice yoga as a way of managing or recovering from a health issue. Always make your yoga teacher aware of any issues that you may have before the class begins. Alternative postures can always be given.

Can I eat before practice?

Try to eat atleast two hours before practice. Ideally yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach.

I’ve never tried yoga before, can I come along?

Absolutely! I would be more than happy for any beginner to attend my class.

Headstands or Sirsana is often referred to as the king of yoga poses.
I am a member of Yoga Alliance Professionals. The teacher training course I completed was also accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals, ensuring a high standard of teaching.
